Now is a great time to get into the energy efficiency industry, but not everyone is aware of the opportunities available to them and how it benefits their communities. The industry has gone through various changes over the years which creates challenges for businesses to retain and recruit experienced individuals. With all the potential funding sources for this work, programs should be actively recruiting diverse individuals and women to the workforce. There are various methods to make connections between a diverse workforce and the program implementers. The energy efficiency industry should be creating career pathways for talented workers and removing barriers to invite individuals from all communities into the industry.
This panel discussion will highlight the experiences of a group of diverse small business owners and energy efficiency specialists who have built their careers in the industry.  The panel will discuss the decision process they went through, the barriers they’ve encountered, training or apprenticeship programs they participated in and the opportunities they see on the horizon. The panel will also discuss various methods for recruiting and promoting a diverse workforce both in urban and rural areas. Q&A with attendees will be provided.

  • Learn how to utilize training and apprentice programs to recruit diverse individuals, women and individuals from rural communities
  • Understand the barriers for diverse individuals to enter the workforce and how to connect them with various programs
