Kathleen Smith is the Vice President of Programs + Innovation at the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). In this role, she leads the development and evolution of ILFI’s industry-leading programs and initiatives including the Living Building Challenge, Core Green Building Certification, Zero Energy, Zero Carbon, Declare, Living Project Challenge, Just, and ILFI's Affordable Housing Program. Kathleen is a LEED Fellow, winner of the Women in Sustainability Leadership Award, and an architect by training with over 30 years of experience in sustainable design, construction, and education. Before her current role, Kathleen served key roles in several organizations including principal at Ecosmith Architecture and Consulting; a national sustainability service line leader for AECOM; and a project architect and director of consulting for Van der Ryn Architects. Kathleen has worked on dozens of high-performance buildings around the country. She has also worked with various institutions and government agencies to develop policies and programs that have had far-reaching impacts in advancing green building beyond a single building. She is recognized as an inspiring and highly effective teacher and speaker. She is also the co-author of two books: Rebuilding Community in America and The Northwest Green Home Primer.
