Lieko Earle is a Senior Researcher in the Residential Buildings Research group at NREL. Her current research centers around grid-interactive building innovations, including home energy management systems (HEMS), connected/smart appliances, and electrification strategies. As a 13-year veteran of NREL’s residential field test program, Lieko is particularly interested in the challenges and opportunities posed by building retrofits. She enjoys developing field experiments and analysis methods to identify gaps and barriers for emerging and advanced retrofit systems to be implemented on a broad basis. She believes that innovative technologies and programs are crucial not only for reducing our carbon emissions to combat climate change, but also to tackle societal challenges of housing affordability and energy burden, which disproportionately impact the most vulnerable communities. Lieko holds an Sc.B. in Physics from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Colorado.
