The content of this session/presentation is intended to promote the philosophy of the affordable deep energy retrofit. Building performance professionals talk a lot about the low hanging fruit and the deep energy retrofit. Unfortunately this ignores a very significant space in between these two weatherization concepts. The affordable retrofit speaks to the too often ignored middle space in which the much of the United States population resides. This presentation intends to explore, advance and amplify the concept of the affordable retrofit also known as deep energy retrofit light. The focus of this session is on capturing the first 90% of energy savings in almost every building that is more affordably attainable. The focus intentionally ignores the last 5 to 10% of energy savings that on a cost basis can often cost almost as much as the first 90%. This practice deemphasizes the last 5 - 10% because it is too expensive and just not worth the cost when there are so many buildings in need of basic energy saving improvements . This philosophy does not reject trying to find greater savings but rather defers it or puts a pin in it for future consideration .
